Chris I., a long time KMNY student, sent Davide an e mail the other day asking whether he would have to take all 4 Evals. before testing for Green Belt. Chris has been training Green Belt for a while and if he were to take all 4 Evals., he would have to wait another year before taking his test. We realized, thanks to Chris’ e mail, that although we know the answer, this issue was never formally addressed. This is the reason we encourage questions, lots of questions. Questions help us clarify what we sometimes take for granted and consequently fail to address.

So, regardless of the level you’re in, if you’ve been training for a while and are wondering the same thing – whether you have to start over and ‘wait out’ all the Evals before taking your test – the answer is NO, you don’t. By the way, Chris also asked when exactly the Evals and Belt Test will be. Here is more on both subjects.

Progress Evals will be conducted the last Monday of every quarter. They will run the entire week, Monday through Saturday during regularly scheduled class times. The Belt Test will take place the following Sunday at 11 am. Mark your calendar everyone. This schedule is now fixed. Changes to it, if any, will be announced separately. Based on this schedule therefore, and just to be sure we’re all on the same page, the 1st Progress Eval will run Monday March 26 through Saturday March 31. The 1st Belt Test will therefore be Sunday April 8.

Circling back to Chris’ first question. The March Eval in many ways is the most important because it will be serve as the mechanism to ‘catch up’ all existing students. Before that Eval, we are going to sit down with each and every one of you (yes, that’s a lot of sit downs so please be patient), present the Eval and Test sheets, which you already have access to, and discuss with you where you feel you are. We are NOT going to tell you where you are, we are going to discuses it openly. After that discussion, we’ll both decide which Eval you’ll be taking in March (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Progress) and whether your Eval will be immediately followed by a Belt Test. Our get together may also be a good time to discuss your long term training goals and renew your Enrollment so it’s in line with those goals, or not – we’ll leave this up to you. In an effort to better outline what will take place the last week of March and at our get together before that, below you’ll find some examples relevant to your Belt level. We hope that this explains things better. If not, please keep the questions coming.

Examples:

If you just started with us, I think it’s pretty clear where you are. Come the last week of March, you’ll be taking your 1st Eval toward your Yellow Belt. If you started with us a while back, come March you may be taking your 2nd Eval and you may be taking the Yellow Belt Test on April 8th. We’ll both decide this when we meet.

If you already tested for Yellow Belt, depending on how long ago that was, come March you may be taking your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Eval. If you’re taking your 3rd Eval in March, be ready to test for Orange on April 8th. We can decide where you are and which Eval you should take when we meet.

If you’ve tested for Orange Belt and are waiting to test for Green Belt, it’s more of the same. When we sit down before the March Eval, we’ll both decide whether in March you’ll be evaluated for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Eval. Depending on where we both feel you are in the rotation will determine the Eval you’ll take. If we decide that the March Eval will represent your 4th Eval, then be ready to test on April 8.

If you’ve already tested for Green Belt and need to take the Blue Belt Test, when we sit down prior to the March Eval we’ll both determine at what point in the rotation you’re at and take it from there. Some Green Belt students will be taking their 1st Eval toward Blue Belt, others their 2nd, perhaps other their 3rd and some we know will be taking their 4th and final Eval, which means that they will Test for Blue Belt on April 8.

If you’re wondering about Brown Belt, you probably got the picture by now and guessed correctly. Yes, same thing. Our sit down before March will determine where you’re at and come the March Eval, you’ll take the appropriate Progress Eval.

Final Note

on this (we think), and the good news. Once we get passed the March Evals and Tests (for those that will test), everyone will know exactly where they are in their Belt rotation. Going forward, you’ll be in a position to monitor your progress, but we intend to help you. At some point we’d like for your progress and Belt level to be represented visually so that at a glance, you’ll know exactly where you are (and where everyone else is)

Things To Know:

Progress Evals do not have to be attended in order. It’s completely acceptable, for example, to attend the Block C Eval (completing months C1, C2, and C3) before attending other Evals. Which Evals you attend first will depend in large part on when you take your Green Belt Promotion and start your Advanced level training rotation.

Once the recommended training Blocks have been completed and Evals have been attended, students are encouraged to participate in Belt Promotions, including Black Belt. Belt Promotions are scheduled separately from Progress Evals. Except for Black Belt, Krav Maga New York does not issue formal Belt Promotion invitations, so unless you’re testing for Black belt, don’t expect one. If you’ve trained the Blocks, there’s no reason not to attend the Blue & Brown Belt Promotion.

If you’ve been training consistently but for whatever reason miss Evals or miss Belt Promotions, don’t worry you can still advance. You’ll simply ‘make up’ what you’ve missed the next time it’s offered

If you’ve been training consistently but for whatever reason miss Evals or miss the Belt Promotions, don’t worry you can still advance. You’ll simply ‘make up’ what you’ve missed the next time it’s offered

Estimated Completion Time:

Approximately 6 to 9 Months

Training Blocks:

Block A, 3 Months (months A1, A2, and A3)

Block B, 3 Months (months B1, B2, and B3)

Progress Evaluations:

2 Evaluations Recommended; the 1st After Block A and the 2nd After Block B

Student Goals:

Complete Block A Months A1, A2, A3 – Attend 1st Progress Eval

Complete Block B Months B1, B2, B3 – Attend 2nd Progress Eval

Participate in Belt Promotion Scheduled Shortly After 2nd Eval

Receive Your Yellow Belt Certificate

Graduate Elementary School

Things To Know:

Although it is up to the Beginner student to decide when to attend Novice classes, in general a Beginner student should move from Beginner classes to Novice classes sometime between month 1 and their 1st Progress Eval. (month 3).

Progress Evals do not have to be attended in order. It’s completely acceptable to attend the Block B Eval (completing months B1, B2, and B3) before attending Block A Eval. Which Evals you attend first will depend in large part on when you first started your training

Once the recommended training Blocks have been completed and both Evals have been attended, students are encouraged to participate in the Belt Promotion. Belt Promotions are scheduled separately from Progress Evals. Krav Maga New York does not issue formal Belt Promotion invitations, so don’t expect one. If you’ve trained both Blocks, there’s no reason not to attend the Promotion.

If you’ve been training consistently but for whatever reason miss and Eval or miss the Belt Promotion itself, don’t worry you can still advance. You’ll simply ‘make up’ what you’ve missed the next time it’s offered

While the center is slated to run thousands of classes every year, on Thursday, January 5th our Force Training Team ran the first class ever held at Paladin Center. And yesterday, as hundreds toured the center - including Senator Greg Ball and Governor Cuomo’s appointee for commissioner of Homeland Security – KMNY demonstrated a small fraction of the center’s potential as it taught LEO’s defenses against edged weapons.

Fitness students please note the following: (1) The Monday morning Yoga class starts on January 9th. (2) The Wednesday morning Kick Boxing class starts the 2nd week of January. (3) Another Kick Boxing class is slated to start in approximately 6 weeks — If you’re considering joining our Fitness Program, do it now. As more and more classes are added, program fees will change.

Krav Maga students please note the following: (1) The Monday night Segment class has been removed from the schedule. (2) A new Law Enforcement Only class has been added Sunday morning at 9:00 am. (3) Because Krav Maga is a Belted system, the new schedule references Belts instead of Levels. If you’re not sure which Belt level you are at, please ask. (4) The January Newsletter containing more info on Belt levels and training for the month (and other things too) will be posted shortly
