Why We Do What We Do

At Krav Maga New York, we believe that fitness alone isn’t enough when it comes to self-reliance, empowerment, overall awareness and safety. Building strength and stamina is important, but it doesn’t prepare you for real-world threats. The truth is, fitness won't help you in a chokehold, but knowledge will. Our mission is simple: to teach you how to protect yourself and those you love with real world, practical, easy to learn self-defense skills that can be executed under stress.

Common Self-Defense Misconceptions

When it comes to self-defense, myths are everywhere - and they stop people from taking the first step toward protecting themselves. Let’s break down some of the most common misconceptions:

Women

• Many women believe they can’t win against a stronger attacker, but self-defense isn’t about "winning"- it’s about fighting back hard enough to stop the threat or discourage the attacker from pursuing continued action - so you can get away.

• Many women also believe that fighting back will make things worse, but research shows the opposite. Fighting back is a highly effective deterrent, but you need the right tools - kicks, elbows, palm strikes - and the right tactics to use them effectively.

Men

• Self-defense is often misunderstood as an expression of toughness or "macho" behavior. In reality, it’s the exact opposite. Fighting is for emergencies, not ego trips. When the stakes are high, fitness alone won’t help you. What makes a difference is superior training, superior mindset, superior weapons and superior tactics.

• Men are often reluctant to learn because they don't want to look "stupid". You won't. There's nothing stupid about training in self-defense, and you'll be surrounded by likeminded people. So don't let anything get in the way of learning the most important skillset life has to offer.

For both men and women - and even children - the idea that learning to defend yourself is something to fear or avoid is a myth rooted in discomfort and societal expectations. But violence has existed since the dawn of humanity - it’s part of nature. Understanding it, and learning how to defend yourself against it, is a skill every human being should possess. What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a practical, realistic, situation-based system of self-defense originally developed for the Israeli Defense Forces.

Why is Krav Maga best for practical self-defense?

Krav Maga emphasizes quick, aggressive, efficient solutions to escape threats and danger. Krav Maga focuses on the least amount of techniques possible to cover the most amount of attacks. Simplicity is key. You have less to learn so you develop faster.

How does Krav Maga differ from other martial arts?

Traditional martial art takes years to master. Typical martial arts have more structured techniques. Perfecting techniques is emphasized due to the competiton or "sports" factor. As well, martial arts emphasize "legal" strikes for competiton puropses. There are no competitons in Krav Maga. No competitions means no rules. Rules do not exist in a real world self-defense scenario.

What self-defense techniques will I learn?

Krav Maga pulls the best parts of other arts or systems when it comes to striking. Defenses against grabs, holds and chokes are instead unique to Krav Maga - simple, instinctive, fast, effective and intelligent. Minimizing reaction time is one of the fundamntal goals.

How long until I get my first belt?

Pretty fast! And that's only becase Krav Maga is easy to learn. Within 16 - 18 classes we encourage students to participate in their Advanced White Belt promotion.

What if I don't feel strong enough or fit enough to start?

Krav Maga based self defense is not based on age, gender, strength or size. It’s principle based, not technique based. Many new students share that concern only to quickly realize that strength doesn't matter and that fitness is gained through training.

I don't consider myself "sporty" or coordinated. Will that be a problem?

Not at all! Many students who participate in our adult martial arts classes would have describe themselves that same way when they first started. You'll fit right in! Be patient. Give yourself some leeway. And you will be amazed at you improvement! In our beginner classes, our instructors keep things simple. Will my child become a bully?

The opposite! Our students develop increased confidence to stand up to bullies and step in for their peers when needed. Your child will have increased humility and kindness because your child is a good kid. Krav Maga only amplifies one's true nature.

Are parents allowed to watch?

We encourage parents to watch their children and observe what techniques and skills they're learning. Even better… join some of our classes for adults. Your kids will love that you have something in common.

What do I need to bring?

Wear comfortable, athletic clothing. We train with sneakers, so bring your sneakers to class. Plenty of water is also a good idea.

What program do you recommend?

The majority of our adults particpate in a mix of self-defense and fitness classes. We recommend you also try a mix of classes during your trial.
